The undrafted product out of Wisconsin made two appearances for the Commanders this season, operating exclusively on special teams. The veteran wideout caught 43 passes for 529 yards across 16 appearances with Cincinnati in 2019, but he's mostly known for his abilities as a return man. With his new contract, he'll have a chance to compete for a roster spot heading into next year's training camp.

Erickson served as the team's punt returner with Dax Milne (foot) out against the Giants on Sunday, gaining 26 yards on four returns. Erickson was elevated to the active roster and served as Washington's primary punt returner with Dax Milne (foot) inactive Sunday versus the Falcons. However, the practice-squad wideout would up with just two fair catches and no punt returns over his three special-teams snaps. Erickson also did not see any work on offense while running back Antonio Gibson handled kick-return duties Week 12. The 30-year-old receiver will now be eligible for two more elevations while with the Commanders' practice squad this season, and he could serve a similar role on special teams if Milne remains sidelined versus the Giants next Sunday.

The Commanders elevated Erickson from their practice squad to their active roster Saturday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports.
Washington needs a kick returner with Dax Milne (foot) ruled out Sunday against Atlanta, and Erickson's elevation could have him taking over punt returns, per Sam Fortier of The Washington Post. This is Erickson's first elevation of the campaign after handling both kickoff and punt returns while playing a minimal role on offense for Carolina last season.

Erickson caught each of his three targets for 44 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to Kansas City, leading the Commanders in receiving yards for a second straight week.
Erickson has five catches for 90 yards on six targets, but he's been less successful in the return game and faces new competition there with RB Antonio Gibson now in the mix on special teams. Erickson, Dax Milne, Cam Sims and Dyami Brown are competing for what likely will be two or three roster spots at wide receiver, with special teams a big part of the equation. Washington's top three to start the season appears set with Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel.

Erickson caught just three of four targets for 55 yards across 17 appearances with the Panthers last season, but he has proven to be a reliable punt returner during his first six NFL seasons. Washington also has Dax Milne and Curtis Samuel (hamstring) as potential punt-return options to replace DeAndre Carter, who signed with the Chargers this offseason. Erickson was hardly involved offensively this season, catching just three of four targets for 55 yards in 17 games.
