  • Phillies' Michael Lorenzen: Dominant in Phillies debut

Lorenzen (1-0) earned the win Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over eight innings against the Marlins. He struck out five. Lorenzen was terrific in his Phillies debut, holding the Marlins to just two runs over a season-high eight innings of work. The newly acquired right-hander retired 10 consecutive batters after giving up his first run, before then allowing a solo home run off the bat of Bryan De La Cruz. Lorenzen has now conceded two runs or fewer in six of his last eight starts, while the home run he allowed Thursday was the first he's given up since June 25.

  • Phillies' Michael Lorenzen: Debuting for Phillies on Thursday

Lorenzen will make his first start for the Phillies on Thursday at Miami, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Lorenzen was acquired earlier Tuesday from the Tigers, for whom he had delivered a 3.58 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 83:27 K:BB through 105.2 innings (18 starts) this season. Philadelphia is going to roll with a six-man rotation for the time being, per Zolecki, but Ranger Suarez or Cristopher Sanchez could eventually be pushed to the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Falls to former team Thursday

Lorenzen (5-7) took the loss against the Angels in Game 1 of a doubleheader Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over five innings. Lorenzen has thrived since departing the Angels to join Detroit in the offseason, earning his first career All-Star selection and coming into Thursday having tossed three straight scoreless outings. However, he was no match for Shohei Ohtani in the matinee of the twin bill, as the two-way star tossed a complete-game shutout to hand Lorenzen the loss. Despite the defeat, Lorenzen pitched fairly well, compiling 16 swinging strikes and tying a season high with seven punchouts. The right-hander's next start is tentatively scheduled to be a road matchup against the Pirates next week.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Tigers-Angels postponed Wednesday

Lorenzen and the Tigers won't face the Angels on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Detroit. The two teams will make up the postponed game as part of a straight doubleheader Thursday. Expect Lorenzen to start one of those games, while Matt Manning likely takes the hill for the other.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Extends scoreless streak in win

Lorenzen (5-6) earned the win Thursday, allowing three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings against the Royals. He struck out three. Lorenzen faced little resistance from the Royals on Thursday, needing just 89 pitches to deliver seven scoreless frames. The 31-year-old Lorenzen hasn't allowed a run in his last three starts (18.2 innings), lowering his ERA to 3.49 with a 1.09 WHIP and 76:26 K:BB through 17 starts (100.2 innings) this season. Lorenzen will look to extend his streak in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the Angels.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Works around wildness

Lorenzen (4-6) scattered two hits and five walks while striking out seven over 6.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday versus the Mariners. Two of Lorenzen's four scoreless appearances this year have come in his last two outings -- he's pitched 11.2 consecutive shutout innings in July. The right-hander is up to seven quality starts with a 3.75 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 73:25 K:BB through 93.2 innings on the season. Lorenzen is projected for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Earns win before All-Star Game

Lorenzen (3-6) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the Athletics. He allowed three hits and struck out four. Lorenzen powered through a subpar Oakland lineup and got plenty of support in the 9-0 win. The righty's next appearance is set for Tuesday's All-Star Game, which will be his first time in the Midsummer Classic. Lorenzen finishes the first half with a 4.03 ERA and 66 strikeouts across 87 innings (15 starts). Those numbers don't jump off the page, but they've been much needed on a Detroit pitching staff that has been decimated by injuries.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Surrenders two runs in no-decision

Lorenzen allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings Sunday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. Lorenzen posted his second consecutive start allowing two runs or less but failed to reach six innings for the first time since May 22. He generated eight whiffs on the day and gave up just two extra-base hits, one of which was a two-run homer to Donovan Solano in the third inning. Lorenzen has not picked up a win since May 16, but Sunday's effort brought his ERA down to a 3.97 to go with a 1.16 WHIP and 58:19 K:BB over 77 innings. He lines up for an uninviting road game in Colorado this weekend.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Takes tough-luck loss Tuesday

Lorenzen (2-5) allowed one run on six hits across six innings and took the loss Tuesday against the Royals. He walked three and struck out seven. Lorenzen pitched well and logged his sixth quality start of the season, but the Tigers provided zero run support in the 1-0 loss. That's been a theme all year, as Detroit is 29th in the majors in runs scored. That's made wins hard to come by for Lorenzen, and he's still in search of his first victory since May 16. This was his second loss of the year in which he allowed only a single run. The righty will look for more run support and a chance at his third win in his next outing, which is slated to come this weekend against the Twins.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Allows six runs in loss

Lorenzen (2-4) allowed six runs on nine hits across six innings to take the loss in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Atlanta. He walked two and struck out three. Lorenzen allowed six runs for the second straight start, with three solo home runs accounting for half of the damage Wednesday. The righty had a 3.21 ERA before this rough patch but has seen that balloon to 4.23. Lorenzen has a fairly thin margin of error because he doesn't miss a ton of bats, and he's now sitting at 47 strikeouts through 66 innings this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, which should come early next week against the Royals.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Possible waiver wire pickups

If what Michael Lorenzen has been doing lately is something he's capable of sustaining, we probably would have seen it before this year. Having said that, it's lasted long enough that you probably want to take a flier just in case. His latest outing Saturday saw him allow just one run on two hits in seven innings. It was the fifth start in six in which he allowed one earned run or fewer over six innings or more, giving him a 1.83 ERA during that stretch. He's still not missing bats at a useful rate or even limiting hard contact, but what he is doing is pounding the strike zone like never before, with 68.2 percent of his pitches going for strikes compared to 62.2 percent prior to 2023. It seems unavoidable he'll give up more hits moving forward, but he could possibly settle in as an efficient workhorse type.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Strong start wasted Saturday

Lorenzen didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the White Sox, allowing one run on two hits over seven innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. The right-hander did uncork two wild pitches, one of which brought home the only run against him -- foreshadowing the game's ending, when a Jose Cisnero wild pitch ricocheted off the mask of home plate umpire Cory Blaser and allowed Yoan Moncada to score -- but otherwise Lorenzen delivered arguably his best outing of the season. He's produced quality starts in five of his last six trips to the mound, posting a 1.83 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 39.1 innings over that stretch, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is likely to come at home next weekend against the Diamondbacks.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Sleeper pitchers for Week 9 (May 22-28)

Michael Lorenzen has been surprisingly effective in three May starts, allowing a combined two runs in a combined 20 innings. We know he's not actually that good, but with matchups against two suspect offenses, the Royals and White Sox, hopefully he can keep pretending.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Looks sharp to earn win in nightcap

Lorenzen (1-1) allowed one run on four hits across seven innings to earn the win in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets. He walked two and struck out one. Outside of the low strikeout total, Lorenzen was great, and he was able to earn his first win of the year as the Tigers provided eight runs of support. The righty missed the first three weeks of the season with a groin injury and now has a 5.14 ERA across four starts. He's tentatively lined up to take the mound again Monday against Cleveland, where he'll look to build from this positive outing.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Start postponed due to weather

Lorenzen's scheduled start against the Mets on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Lorenzen will instead likely take the ball against the Mets on Wednesday with Tuesday's postponement being made up in a split doubleheader. The Tigers may need to alter their rotation beyond that point, as Detroit doesn't have another off day until May 11 before a three-game series against the Mariners.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Gives up five runs in loss

Lorenzen (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings during a 6-2 loss to the Brewers. He struck out five. Lorenzen struggled to find his command early, as he hit Christian Yelich, walked Jesse Winker and fell behind 3-0 to Rowdy Tellez in the first inning. After the right-hander worked his way back into the count, Tellez opened the scoring with an RBI double, and Brian Anderson followed with a two-run single. After appearing to settle down, Lorenzen served up a two-run blast to Victor Caratini in the third but was able to get out of the inning and posted two scoreless frames before getting pulled. It's been mixed results for Lorenzen since making his delayed season debut, as he's allowed 11 runs over two starts (nine innings) but tossed five shutout frames in his other outing. He'll look to build some momentum in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for Detroit's upcoming three-game set versus the Mets.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Five shutout frames

Lorenzen did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three hits and one walk over five scoreless innings during a 2-1 loss to the Orioles. He struck out four. Lorenzen missed the first three weeks of the 2023 regular season due to a groin strain, so he was making just his second start of the year. It was a strong bounce-back performance after he served up six runs over four innings against the Giants in his season debut. He'll look to maintain his momentum during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for Detroit's upcoming three-game road set in Milwaukee.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Bailed out by offense

Lorenzen didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Giants, surrendering six runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out six. The strikeouts were somewhat encouraging, but Lorenzen's first start of the season was mostly poor as he served up two-run home runs to Blake Sabol in the second inning and J.D. Davis in the third, eventually exiting after 79 pitches (52 strikes). Fortunately for the right-hander, he got bailed out by Detroit's batters after he hit the showers. Lorenzen, whose season debut was delayed due to a spring groin strain, should remain in the rotation for at least another couple turns. He'll hope he's shaken off all the rust ahead of his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Baltimore.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Season debut coming Saturday

Lorenzen (groin) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list and start Saturday against the Giants, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Lorenzen has missed the first few weeks of the season with a left groin strain. He made a rehab start last Saturday with Triple-A Toledo but got hit around quite a bit, surrendering four earned runs over 2.1 frames. It's best to limit expectations as the 31-year-old righty works his way back into the rhythm of the season.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: On track to return this weekend

Lorenzen (groin) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list and return to Detroit's rotation at some point during this weekend's series against the Giants, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Friday's series opener appears to be the tentative target, and Lorenzen's impending activation comes with good timing after Matt Manning landed on the injured list Wednesday due to a fractured right foot. Lorenzen has missed the first three weeks of the 2023 campaign while recovering from a left groin strain. He gave up four earned runs over just 2.1 innings in his lone rehab start last Saturday with Triple-A Toledo, so fantasy expectations should be tempered if he pitches this weekend.
