  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Picks up first career save

Sheehan earned a save against the Athletics on Thursday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters over four innings. In Sheehan's first big-league appearance out of the bullpen, he piggybacked with starter Julio Urias, who was limited to five frames due to a recent fingernail issue. Sheehan gave up a pair of solo homers but kept Oakland at arm's length, tossing 56 pitches over the game's final four innings to record a save. The rookie right-hander worked as a starter for each of his first seven big-league appearances, but Thursday's outing may be a signal that he's no longer needed in that role with the Dodgers' recent acquisitions of Lance Lynn and Ryan Yarbrough and the looming return of Clayton Kershaw (shoulder).

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Throws five scoreless innings

Sheehan allowed two hits and a walk while striking out five over five scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Reds on Saturday. Caleb Ferguson couldn't hold the lead in the sixth inning, costing Sheehan a chance at the win. The right-hander rebounded well from a skid that saw him allow 17 runs over 12.1 innings across his previous three starts. He's now at a 5.77 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 27:17 K:BB through 34.1 innings across seven starts this season. Sheehan remains on the bubble for a rotation spot with the Dodgers, though Saturday's outing may give him the upper hand over Michael Grove to remain a starter until Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) is ready to return.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Suffers first loss

Sheehan (3-1) allowed eight runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Rangers. There's only one positive to take out of this -- Sheehan avoided allowing a home run. Beyond that, it was the worst start of his young career against arguably the most dangerous offense he's faced so far, though the Rangers were missing Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia from the lineup. Sheehan has given up at least four runs in each of his three outings in July after allowing just five total runs over 17 innings in his first three career starts. Sheehan has a 6.75 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 22:16 K:BB through 29.1 innings overall. He's tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Reds next weekend, but he could be at risk of losing his place in the rotation if the Dodgers pursue starting pitchers at the trade deadline.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Yields four runs in win

Sheehan (3-0) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings Monday, striking out two and earning a win against Baltimore. Sheehan coughed up three runs over the first two innings but was able to settle in and improve to 3-0. The 23-year-old has struggled in his last two outings; he's coughed up nine runs with a 6:7 K:BB through 8.2 innings during that span. His ERA now sits at 4.91 through five career MLB appearances. Sheehan's next start is projected to be in Texas this weekend.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Sustains first bad start

Sheehan allowed five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings, taking a no-decision Tuesday versus the Pirates. Sheehan had allowed just five total runs over his first 17 major-league innings. He gave up a two-run double in the first inning and then ran into more trouble in the fourth before he was relieved by Caleb Ferguson. Sheehan has showed promise so far, posting a 4.35 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB through 20.2 innings over four starts. He'll likely have extra time to reset from this poor outing, as he's not likely to pitch again before the All-Star break.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Holds his own Thursday

Sheehan (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out five without walking a batter over five innings to earn the win Thursday over the Rockies. Inclement weather delayed the start of the game, but it didn't quiet the Dodgers' bats. Sheehan left the game with an 11-3 lead, and he threw 60 of 88 pitches for strikes in another solid outing in the most challenging of venues for his first career road start. This was also the first time in his three career starts that he didn't walk a batter. He's pitched to a 2.65 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB over 17 innings so far. Sheehan's making a great impression and a strong case to remain in the rotation even as Julio Urias (hamstring) is set to return Saturday. Sheehan's projected to face the Pirates next week.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Next start coming Friday

Sheehan is slated to start Friday's game against the Astros in Los Angeles, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. After Sheehan tossed six no-hit innings in his MLB debut last Friday against the Giants, manager Dave Roberts confirmed the rookie would receive at least one more turn through the Dodgers rotation. The skipper didn't initially clarify whether Sheehan would take the hill for Wednesday's road game in the Angels or at some point during the series with Houston, but the young right-hander is now officially locked in to make his second career start versus the reigning World Series champions. The length of Sheehan's stay with the big club will likely hinge on how he performs versus Houston and any additional starts that may follow, as well as the availability of Julio Urias (hamstring), who could be ready to rejoin the rotation at some point late next week.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Possible waiver wire pickups

Sheehan was arguably the biggest riser among pitching prospects prior to his promotion, putting together a 1.86 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 14.9 K/9 and Spencer Strider-like 20 percent swinging-strike rate at Double-A Tulsa. In fact, the characteristics of his fastball are said to be Strider-like with its vertical approach angle and "rising" action. The fact he got only four swinging strikes in his major-league debut Friday does give me some pause, but then again, he no-hit a pretty good team over six innings. I'd call that reason for excitement, and though there are workload concerns and even a possibility he'll return to the minors once Julio Urias is activated from the IL, Sheehan is a worthy upside play at a position where everyone has a need.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Sticking in rotation for now

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Saturday that Sheehan will remain in the big-league rotation for at least one more start, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Sheehan could hardly have done better in his MLB debut Friday, as he tossed six no-hit innings Friday in a no-decision. Julio Urias (hamstring) and Noah Syndergaard (finger) are working back from the injured list, but Sheehan will have time to make at least one more start before his job is threatened. Per Eric Stephen of SBNation.com, he'll be given extra rest prior to that start, so he'll get ball during the weekend series against the Astros.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Sterling in major-league debut

Sheehan struck out three and walked two over six no-hit, scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Friday. Sheehan had about as good a debut as possible, throwing 51 of 89 pitches for strikes. The excellent start was wasted by the Dodgers' bullpen, which allowed the lead to slip away in the eighth inning. Sheehan hadn't pitched above Double-A before Friday -- he had a 1.86 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 88:23 K:BB through 53.1 innings at that level this season. It's likely he's not going back there any time soon, though it's unknown if he'll stay in the majors or head to Triple-A Oklahoma City. With Noah Syndergaard (finger) set for a slow ramp-up process and Julio Urias (hamstring) in need of at least one rehab outing, it's possible Sheehan could remain in the rotation to face the Angels next week.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Officially called up for start

Los Angeles selected Sheehan's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday, Matthew Moreno of DodgerBlue.com reports. Sheehan is added to the 40-man roster to make his MLB debut against the Giants on Friday, and he's expected to make at least one more start after, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. The right-hander was sensational for Double-A Tulsa with 88 strikeouts in 53 innings with a 1.86 ERA, and he's an intriguing streamer with even more long-term potential in his right arm.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Coming up for MLB debut

Sheehan will be called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make his major-league debut against the Giants on Friday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. Sheehan was promoted from Double-A Tulsa to Oklahoma City last weekend but will wind up making a start in the big leagues before he starts for OKC. The 23-year-old has been fantastic this season at Tulsa, putting up a 1.86 ERA and 88:23 K:BB over 53 innings. Questions remain as to whether Sheehan will be able to throw enough strikes, but he has a big fastball and an excellent changeup that he uses to miss plenty of bats. With the Dodgers' rotation battling multiple injuries, Sheehan could potentially get multiple starts if he pitches well.

  • Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Extends dominance into June

Sheehan earned the win for Double-A Tulsa on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over 5.1 innings. Sheehan put up absurd numbers in May, allowing just one run and eight hits over 24.2 innings while posting a 41:10 K:BB. His first start in June was an extension of that dominance, as he racked up 17 whiffs and seven more punchouts. The right-hander's season stats include a 1.64 WHIP, 0.79 WHIP and 15.1 K/9, with his only real flaw being a so-so 3.5 BB/9. Sheehan has improved in that area of late with just six walks over his past 20.1 frames as he continues to emerge as one of the minors' most exciting pitching prospects. He's yet to pitch at the Triple-A level and may not see the majors until next season, but Sheehan is certainly a name to watch and could end up as the most impactful arm among the Dodgers' many young pitching prospects.
