  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Tosses quality start Thursday

Woo pitched six innings against the Angels on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six batters in a no-decision. Woo got through five scoreless frames before the Angels tagged him for two runs in the sixth. The right-hander departed in line for a tough loss but was let off the hook when Seattle rallied for four runs in the ninth. Woo got back on track in the strikeout department, fanning six batters after failing to record a punchout over five frames in his previous outing. His quality start Thursday was the third of his rookie campaign so far.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Logs zero punchouts in five frames

Woo pitched five innings against Arizona on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out zero batters in a no-decision. Woo came into the contest with 54 punchouts over 44 big-league frames, so it was surprising to see him tally five innings without recording a single strikeout. Despite that oddity, the rookie righty managed a respectable showing, keeping Arizona off the scoreboard through three frames before allowing three runs over the fourth and fifth. Woo's ability to miss bats is perhaps his most alluring asset in fantasy, and it's logical to expect this outing to be an aberration in that regard. Still, Woo's a risky pitcher to roster in fantasy redraft leagues given a few shaky starts this season, as well as the likelihood that he'll be shut down at some point to limit his workload.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Fans seven in loss

Woo (1-3) allowed four runs on four hits and a walk over six-plus innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against Toronto. Woo tossed three scoreless frames before coughing up a two-run shot to Vladimir Guerrero in the fourth inning. Woo's given up multiple homers in two straight games after being taken deep just once in his previous four outings. Following a stretch of six consecutive starts allowing two or fewer runs, he's been tagged with 10 runs over his last two appearances. While his ERA rose to 4.91, he's sporting a strong 54:13 K:BB across 44 career MLB innings. Woo's next start is projected to be in Arizona.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Falters versus Twins

Woo (1-2) allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out four over 3.1 innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Twins. Woo hadn't given up more than two runs in any of his six previous starts, but he struggled after a 10-day gap between outings. The Twins got to him for two runs in the first inning and then piled on in the third and fourth. Woo is now at a 4.74 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 47:12 K:BB over 38 innings through eight starts this season. He's lined up for a home start versus the Blue Jays this weekend.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Solid in no-decision

Woo allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Saturday. Woo was arguably a little sharper than opposing starter Framber Valdez, but both pitchers exited with the game tied 2-2. This was Woo's second straight quality start, and it took him just 78 pitches (50 strikes) to complete six frames. While the four strikeouts matched a season low, he's allowed no more than two runs in each of his last six outings. He has a 3.63 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB through 34.2 innings over seven starts. The Mariners intend to be careful with the 23-year-old rookie -- he'll likely begin the second half in the rotation, but it's expected he'll be shut down at some point before the end of the season to manage his workload.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Could have abbreviated second half

Woo, who could still make one more start before the All-Star break Saturday at Houston, is expected to be shut down at some point in the second half of the season in order to preserve his arm, Daniel Kramer of the team's official site reports. The rookie right-hander has been outstanding after stumbling out of the gate against the dangerous Rangers in his first major-league start back on June 3, pitching to a 1-0 record, 2.36 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 11.8 K/9 across the 26.2 innings covering his subsequent five outings. However, the Mariners have said all along they'll be careful with Woo, who, when factoring in the 44 frames he logged at Double-A Arkansas before his promotion, has already surpassed the 56 innings he pitched in 2022. General manager Justin Hollander has already alluded to the likelihood Woo will be shut down altogether at some point during the second half, adding "we're not just purely measuring innings; we're measuring stressful innings, how hard they're working in any given outing."

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Turns in quality start

Woo allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings, taking a no-decision in Monday's 6-5 win over the Giants. Woo pitched well and completed six innings for the first time, earning his first quality start. The right-hander has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last five starts, though he has just one win to show for it. He's at a 4.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 39:8 K:BB through 28.2 innings over six career starts. He's in line for one more start before the All-Star break, a weekend road outing versus the Astros.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Possible waiver wire pickups

Woo is far from the most celebrated pitching prospect to earn a call-up in recent weeks, but in many ways, he's been the most effective. The trend continued with a strong outing against the Nationals on Tuesday in which he struck out seven over five one-run innings. He's been racking up swinging strikes at a near 13 percent rate, which would put him in the top 15 among qualifiers. Many of those are coming on the fastball, too, which is always a good indication of ceiling. And while swinging strikes aren't everything, Statcast says Woo deserves to have a 2.45 ERA as opposed to his actual 4.37 mark. Most of the damage came in his debut June 3, and pitchers should always get a pass for their debut, right? My biggest hang-up with Woo is that he has yet to go six innings, but that could change abruptly as long as he continues to pitch well.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Solid in no-decision

Woo allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Nationals on Tuesday. Woo continues to flash strong strikeout numbers with decent control -- he's at a 32:6 K:BB through 22.2 innings across his five starts. He gave up a run in the first and fifth innings Tuesday, but it was the Mariners' bullpen that cost him a chance at his second win. The rookie right-hander has a 4.37 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, and he's settled down after a shaky debut in Texas on June 3. With Marco Gonzales (forearm) suffering a setback, Woo should remain in the rotation well into July. He's projected to make his next start in San Francisco next week.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Notches first MLB victory

Woo (1-1) earned the win over the Yankees on Thursday, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 5.1 scoreless innings. Seattle set Woo up for success with four runs in the top of the first inning, and the rookie right-hander cruised to his first big-league victory with 5.1 scoreless frames. His three walks were a career high and certainly more than the Mariners wanted to see given the big lead they gave him, but none of the free passes came back to hurt him. Woo struggled in his first big-league start, giving up six runs over two frames against Texas on June 3, but he's been much better since, allowing just four runs over his subsequent 15.2 frames and posting a standout 21:4 K:BB over that stretch.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Strikes out nine in no-decision

Woo allowed two runs on three hits and struck out nine without walking a batter over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Friday. Woo was sharp, though two of the three hits he allowed were solo home runs by Gavin Sheets and Andrew Benintendi. After a rough debut, Woo has turned in a couple of reasonably solid starts with 16 strikeouts over his past 10.1 innings. He's still at a 7.30 ERA and 1.30 WHIP through 12.1 innings, but his 20:2 K:BB is a positive sign that he has the control to hang around in the majors. He'll remain in search of his first win next week in a projected road start versus the Yankees.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Performs better in second start

Woo allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over 4.2 innings in a no-decision during Saturday's 6-2 win over the Angels. After getting tagged for six runs in two innings in his debut versus Texas, Woo was much improved against another AL West rival. He still needed 81 pitches (56 strikes) to get 14 outs, falling one-third of an inning short of qualifying for his first win. The blemish on his line Saturday was a two-run home run from Shohei Ohtani. Woo has managed an 11:2 K:BB over 6.2 innings to begin his major-league career -- his strikeout stuff has carried over from Double-A Arkansas, where he racked up 59 strikeouts in 44 innings this season. Assuming he gets another start, he's tentatively projected to face the White Sox in Seattle next week.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Takes loss in MLB debut

Woo (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Saturday's 16-6 loss to the Rangers, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk over two innings. He struck out four. Marco Gonzales (forearm) was placed on the injured list, so Woo was recalled from Double-A Arkansas and made his MLB debut Saturday. The outing certainly didn't go as planned for the 23-year-old, who was dominating in the minors, and it's unclear if he'll get another turn in the rotation. However, Seattle would likely have to select a player from the minors if it isn't going to give Woo another chance.

  • Mariners' Bryan Woo: Reassigned to MiLB camp

Woo was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Mariners on Friday,Corey Brock of The Athletic reports. Woo is considered one of the better pitching prospects in the Seattle system and registered a 84:22 K:BB in 57 innings with a 4.11 ERA for short-season Arizona, Low-A Modesto and High-A Everett. He likely begins the season with Double-A Arkansas, and could be an option for the Mariners as soon as 2024.
